garret_labПопробовал представить себе, как пакостно должно было быть в середине тридцатых годов прошлого века на душе у "среднего" (то есть далёкого от политики, но помнящего о недавно закончившейся мировой войне и не желающего её повторения) европейца в какой-нибудь достаточно благополучной Швеции или Швейцарии: вторжение Японии в Манчжурию, приход к власти коричневых в Германии, гражданская война в Испании, война Италии в Абиссинии, последствия экономического кризиса в США. И этот список дальше становился всё длиннее и страшнее для тогдашнего обывателя, не инфицированного патриотизмом, поскольку этот обыватель должен был видеть, что он безнадёжно проигрывает на абсолютно всех фронтах -- газеты и радио в те времена вполне заменяли сеть. Плохо, что никаких рецептов разумного и успешного поведения в таких суб-оптимальных обстоятельствах, кроме "бежать куда глаза глядят" или "просто забить на весь этот цирк", мы не получили...

Doctrines that set group against group, faith against faith, race against race, class against class, fanning the fires of hatred in men too despondent, too desperate to think for themselves, were used as rabble-rousing slogans on which dictators could ride to power. And once in power they could saddle their tyrannies on whole nations and on their weaker neighbors.
This is the danger to which we in America must begin to be more alert. For the apologists for foreign aggressors, and equally those selfish and partisan groups at home who wrap themselves in a false mantle of Americanism to promote their own economic, financial or political advantage, are now trying European tricks upon us, seeking to muddy the stream of our national thinking, weakening us in the face of danger, by trying to set our own people to fighting among themselves. Such tactics are what have helped to plunge Europe into war. We must combat them, as we would the plague, if American integrity and American security are to be preserved. We cannot afford to face the future as a disunited people.
We must as a united people keep ablaze on this continent the flames of human liberty, of reason, of democracy and of fair play as living things to be preserved for the better world that is to come.

Just as people spoke about the triumph of democracy in the 90s, now you are hearing people talk about end of democracy and the triumph of tribalism and the strong man. We have to resist that cynicism.
Because, we've been through darker times, we've been in lower valleys and deeper valleys. <...>
Because history shows that whenever progress is threatened, and the things we care about most are in question, we should heed the words of Robert Kennedy -- spoken here in South Africa, he said, "Our answer is the world's hope: it is to rely on youth. It's to rely on the spirit of the young."
So, young people, who are in the audience, who are listening, my message to you is simple, keep believing, keep marching, keep building, keep raising your voice. Every generation has the opportunity to remake the world. Mandela said, "Young people are capable, when aroused, of bringing down the towers of oppression and raising the banners of freedom." Now is a good time to be aroused. Now is a good time to be fired up.
And, for those of us who care about the legacy that we honor here today -- about equality and dignity and democracy and solidarity and kindness, those of us who remain young at heart, if not in body -- we have an obligation to help our youth succeed.

Когда за Бухананом (достаточно близкий аналог нынешнему г.) пришел Абрахам Линкольн, результат, во всяком случае, short-term, получился мрачноватый. Не хотелось бы на своем веку через то же пройти...

Но интересно, что вы вспомнили Линкольна. Печально известный Стив Бэннон является поклонником так называемой "теорией поколений", согласно которой в истории действуют циклы длинной примерно в 80 лет (1860 -> 1940 -> 2020) https://tijd.dreamwidth.org/32423.html
